Dolau Mixtures choir who sang in the harvest service at Obergimpern Catholic Church on their recent visit to Germany

The Dolau Mixtures choir and twinning supporters from the Llandrindod area recently visited twin town Bad Rappenau in Southern Germany. During this trip, their second exchange, they enjoyed a weekend of many concerts, helped to close Bad Rappenau’s summer garden festival and joined in Golden October wine fest. The group flew to Frankfurt and completed the journey on a deluxe bus along picturesque Heidleberg riverside. On arrival champagne and pretzel refreshments were offered at the Rathaus with fitting welcome addresses given by Harribert Blattgen Bad Rappenau’s mayor and Theresia Kuehne, twinning chairwoman.

A highlight for all was a visit to the medieval town of Bad Wimpen with a tour focussing on historic sites, sounds and tastes in and around an old fairytale tower overlooking the river Neckar. In the village of Treschklingen a concert at the ancient church included songs old and new with a flavour of Welsh language and world music. The choir’s pianist Chris Green and his daughter Abigail on the cello provided accompaniment. Led by musical director Martin Howard the choir also performed a concert at the Baden-Württemberg State Garden Festival enthusiastically received by a large outdoors audience. The choir’s programme included a variety of vibrant and peaceful music reflecting the Festival’s garden exhibits.

In the village of Obergimpern at the Golden October Fest Dolau Mixtures provided the finale for an evening concert that comprised performances by eight local choirs. They also sang from the balcony at the villages Catholic Church harvest service and received praise likening their performance to flying angels singing. The delicious spread at lunchtime and again after the splendid firework display in early evening certainly produced some portly cherubs for the last sing-along with Bad Rappenau Accordion band at the Burgerhaus. Generosity and warmth from vivacious hosts strengthened and initiated friendships across the generations and cultural divide. Impetus remains to continue efforts to communicate via the English and German languages to maintain contacts and musical exchanges.

The visit was made possible by Llandrindod Wells Twinning Association which is keen to help other local groups who might wish to join in cultural exchange visits. Contact can be made via the Secretary on 01597 823806.
