The Dolau Mixtures is a mixed choir which meets on Tuesday nights at 7.45pm in Dolau Community Hall, near Llandrindod Wells, Powys Mid Wales.

In 1990 Dolau decided to build a village Hall and a group of friends centred around the Church Bellringers formed a choir to perform in the first fundraising concert. Among the group we were lucky to have Marion Rowlatt who had recently moved into the area. Originally we had to persuade and cajole various farmer’s wives, teachers , friends and relations to provide the correct balance to enable us to sing four part harmony.

The first concert we took part in was a Christmas carol and variety concert in our neighbouring village Penybont and at the practices prior to the event we soon realised that we were going to be a very merry group. Whacky names just seemed to appear and after much discussion the Dolau Mixtures were in existence. Over the years we have progressed, numbers have increased and our range of music has expanded. Our repertoire is vast and varied – from Stainer’s Crucifixion to Simon and Garfunkel melody; from sixteenth century madrigals to twenty-first century anthems; from folk songs to close harmony swing arrangements; from Fauré Requiem to the Hallelujah Chorus; from Great Radnor Hills to the Rhythm of Life.

The Dolau Mixtures is a mixed choir – 24 strong who sing for the pleasure singing brings. For several years we practiced in different member’s houses in the village. We had a rota and it was good fun – if we didn’t meet landrovers trying to go the opposite way to our convoy in the narrow lanes. Now we meet in the lovely Community Hall built in 1997 for an hour and a half on Tuesday evenings starting at 7.30pm. We are a fully versatile choir with members being a mixture from Dolau and surrounding areas. We have sung at various fundraising events, harvest festivals, anniversaries, weddings, funerals and in 2006, 2009 and 2012 were part of the Gathering Wave Community Choir at Hereford Cathedral in the Three Choirs Festval.

We pay subscriptions to support ourselves and charge only a modest fee for concerts, aiming to be able to provide support for many charitable organisations. Since our humble beginning we have amassed a collection of music. We are often asked to provide a small musical offering at village and community events – our independence allows us to support and promote churches, chapels, school and recreation association events.

Highlights for the Dolau Mixtures have been three visits to Bad Rappenau in Germany to sing in concerts organised by Llandrindod Wells Twinning Association.

The choir is a small friendly group of singers and welcomes new members – Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass. See Contacts for contact details

I was a pupil at Llanfihangel Rhydithin school when the Dolau Mixtures began and Chris Rowlatt taught me at the School. I can remember the Dolau Mixtures very well and I am deighted to see that the choir is still going and growing. Best Wishes to you all for the future.
